No this isn't some strange erotica or anything. Last night I kept hearing (almost feeling really) this strange thumping. It was every so often. Just about the time I would drift off I would hear another one. I could not figure out what it was. It was the middle of the night and seemed to go on for a long time. It was like a deep thud off in the distance a little. One of the thumps was quite strong and it startled me a little. It sounded close or very strong. I was almost like I felt it. This morning my wife got up complaining about the same noise. She was aggravated and was like "who would be working in the middle of the night when people are trying to sleep !" lol. Have any of you had a similar experience lately or have an idea of what it might have been? I live in a small town with strict noise ordinances after dark. I'm hoping that when Mary returns from work, she'll have heard something. She talks to a lot of locals at work. Small town, word travels fast....

When the electrical appliances are shut off, noises start to occur in my room... A tap on wood, the sound of a plastic bottle being pushed so yo uget the plastic sound... I blame a spirit/ghost/entity, I've had my share of experiences... I wonder who is watching me ;)

Could have been underground blasting going on. The government can never have enough underground tunnels ya know.
In my area, i live some what close to a quarry where people are blasting for gypsum rock. Sometimes i can hear the thud sounds that you describe and sometimes it even rattles the windows.

This wasn't like a noise in the house. It wasn't like tapping on wood, glass, etc... It was more like something hitting the ground really hard. It was deep, and low. If you weren't paying attention or sleeping you could miss it. I remember chuckling to myself, "Godzilla must be coming!"

I read an article once in a newspaper. A couple heard thumping and the like.
What was happening was next door there lived loads of immigrints (like 20 people living in a 4 bedroom house) and some sued to sleep in the loft. And they would sneak in through holes into the coupls house and sleep there...
You sure its not that? |

An underground explosion miles from your house does sound like godzilla stomping on the ground near your house.
You don't hear the KA-BOOM part. You just hear what is left of the explosion after it travels underground for a bit.
Of course though, i wasn't there at your place to know what your talking about, so it could have been something totally different.
I think it's time that you put on your detectives hat and magnifying glass to find out where the sound is coming from.

Hey, El...
Any T-Rex's in the neighborhood?
Actually, it does sound like the noises I hear now and again, only not in the middle of the night. The thudding I hear is the concussion effect of blasting at the mining operations in the area. Are there any mines close to where you live (as in up to five miles away)?
Although it doesn't seem as if anyone would be blasting that late at night, you never know!
Otherwise, maybe H/A is correct: the covert tunnelers may be at it again!
Let us know if the noise continues, okay?

Is the wind blowing hard lately? If so, maybe its a low branch colliding with either your roof or one of your neighbors' roofs. Investigaaaate lol.
If you got some sort of recording device laying around, I'd be more than happy to put it on that website I made for files so everyone can listen to it and come up with a more accurate conclusion. Up to you.

I think that Brandon's suggestion of recording the noise for people to listen to is a good one, but at the moment I favour HumanAlien's theory.
Do you have any mines or quarries near you El?

No local mines, no wind or branches, etc... You really had to listen for it. If it had been during the day, I might never have noticed it. It would have required a special mic to pick it up. The sound wasn't actually that loud but laying still in bed, you could almost feel it. I tried to listen for it last night too. I didn't hear anything though and eventually fell to sleep. It was kind of like bombs going off in the distance but a lot of things might have sounded like that. I'll keep an ear out for it. It was likely nothing, just some idiot working in the middle of the night, but you never know. I've never noticed this before and we've been living in our current house just over 10 years now. If I hear it again, I'll let you know. Might have been one of those weird things that I'll never have an explanation for. If I hear the noise again I'll call in Scooby Doo and the gang. It's a mystery!

You guys are too funny!
El, it does make one wonder, does it not? If it's not a mining blast, or any of the other suggested possibilities...uh, minus my T-Rex comment, that is --at least I HOPE there are no T-Rexes prowling around your neck of the woods --then, what could be making that noise?
Maybe H/A is correct...(Twilight Zone music plays softly in the background)...
