Woot. Good find, Rob. Thanks for sharing. It says they'll test it in space in 2012 or 2013 so its still a few years off but still. Maybe we can have a man on Mars within the decade.

The only problem with that is that only the richest of the rich could afford to pay the fee's to go to mars.
Normal folks like us would never get the chance to go.
I wonder how well it maneuvers with only one pound of thrust.

It would only be for the rich to start with, that doesn't mean it won't be used by ordinary people after a while. Nice find Rob. Hope it gets off the ground (metaphorically, lol) and is used anyway, rather than just being one of those good ideas that gets binned.

Technically, NASA will use it first, then the rich, then the ordinary people. By time ordinary folk get it, though, NASA will be testing a new light-speed drive.

Ah, Mars...
My favorite planet...
I wrote a poem about Mars, back when scientists first discovered water on the Red Planet. I shall share it with you now: It's titled,
The Cosmic Foolie
Once there was water, the scientist said; Once there was water, but now it is dead. Dead? I then said, in immediate reply, The water's not there, but the planet won't die!
I knew in my heart as I spoke to that bloke. That the red planet Mars in a cosmical joke Turned a dry, barren face to the heavens on high And laughed to itself till its rivers, now dry,
Filled to the brim as its watery tears Ran down its cheeks after so many years And gave that old scientist something to see: 'Twas a memorable moment 'tween Ares and me!
Once there was water, the scientist said, And now there is water! (He scratched his bald head) Don't sweat it, I told him; it's quite plain to see That Mars pulled a foolie on NASA and thee!
So next time you're thinking we know all there is, Remember this moment, I said to that whiz; And never suppose that a planet like Mars Is incapable of life, just because it's not ours!
Have a great week!

Ok, that is officially The Most Awesome Thing I've read in a long time! Great poem Cal
And Brandon you're right, I kinda forgot about NASA, lol. In any case it's progress. 39 days is still a relatively long time to get to Mars. In cosmic terms the edge of the solar system is about as far as your front door lol. There must be a faster and more efficient way though, even more so than this, although this is a massive step forward, lol.

That was awesome, Cal. Beautiful yet comical.
And yeah, I imagine once they get this VASIMR up and running, they'll come out with all sorts of upgrades and new models of rocket engines. Who knows where we'll be in ten years or twenty years or even thirty. Look how far computers have come and how far space exploration itself has come (well, space exploration is a joke but still). Wonderful times we're living in, technologically speaking, that is.

Hey, Everyone!
Glad you liked my poem. Poetry comes easily to me (not sure why though).
About space travel...I have this sneaking suspicion that "the powers that be" are more advanced in that particular area than they are letting on.
Could be wrong, though...but, then again...
Have a fabulous week!
